From the pictures to the figurines - 80th Anniversary of the Hummel Figurines
March 14, 2015 to March , 2016
M. I. Hummel - a name that is known universally in the world of porcelain figurines. The success story of the „Hummel figures“ began in the 1930s and has been a visible part of the childhood of many generations of young people since then.
These Hummel „children“ are soon to be 80 years old. The first 46 Hummel figurines were presented by the Goebel Porcelain Factory at the Spring Fair in Leipzig in the year 1935. And it is this event that the Berta Hummel Museum in the Hummel family home will be celebrating with nearly 100 Hummel original drawings which were used to make the first Hummel figurines at the Goebel Porcelain Factory. Information from our archives state that Berta Hummel herself viewed the first 180 figurines and chose suitable colors for them.
The Berta Hummel Museum in the Hummel family home was opened in 1994. At that time there were nearly 1000 original drawings and since then another 100 have been acquired. At least half of those were used as models for the Hummel figurines. With over 3500 figurines available in the archives and still more from collectors of Hummel figurines, the museum is able to present some very old figurines together with the sketches they were made from. Some real „surprises“ will be shown from the Goebel insolvency sale - figurines in various stages of production that have never before been shown to the public.
